Anchorage: Knik Glacier Helicopter and Ice Climbing Tour

About This Experience

Ice climbing on Knik Glacier, reached by helicopter, with no previous experience required. You meet your guide at Knik River Lodge, fly over the glacier, and land beside features that would take most of a day to walk to — frozen waterfalls, crevasse walls and seracs, all a short distance from where the helicopter puts you down.

You get up to four hours on the ice with an instructor — two of them in winter — and all the climbing equipment is provided: boots, crampons, axes, harness, helmet and ropes. The difficulty is yours to set. Guides will find something gentle and confidence-building or something steep, and most groups do both across an afternoon.

In winter the tour adds glacier ice cave exploration, which is only possible once meltwater channels have frozen solid and the surface is stable. That makes this one of the few tours on the site with a genuinely better winter version rather than a reduced one.

Lunch is included and eaten on the glacier — beside it in winter. Bring warm and waterproof clothing: the operator provides the technical gear but not the layers, and standing around on ice between climbs is where people get cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have climbed before?

No. The instructor teaches the technique on the ice and sets the difficulty to your level. What you need is a moderate level of fitness and a willingness to be cold and wet for a few hours.

What is included in the equipment?

Everything technical: ice axes, crampons, harness, helmet and ropes. Not included is clothing — warm and waterproof layers are explicitly your responsibility, and the listing says so.

Is the winter version better?

Different, and arguably yes. Winter adds glacier ice cave exploration, which is only possible once the meltwater channels freeze solid, and puts a second instructor on the ice. Lunch moves to beside the glacier rather than on it.

How much of the four hours is climbing?

Up to four hours on the ice in total, which includes the walk-in from the landing site, the teaching, the climbing itself and lunch. The actual time on the ropes depends on the group.

Why does this tour have no reviews yet?

It is a low-volume specialist product from an operator whose other tours on this site carry 85, 63 and 24 reviews at 4.93 to 4.99. You are booking on the operator's record rather than this listing's, which is worth weighing.
